Approved by the Texas Education Agency, this course will satify the Texas state defensive driving requirement.
Driving Safety Course
You may request to have your citation dismissed by completing a Driving Safety Course approved by the Texas Education Agency (TEA).
To be eligible for Driving Safety, the following requirements must be met:
- Must not have taken a Driving Safety course to dismiss a citation within the last 12 months
- A speeding violation must not exceed 24 MPH over the posted speed limit
- Must be at least 17 years old
- Must posses a valid Texas driver´s license (that is not classified as a commercial drivers license)
- Must have current proof of liability insurance
- Violation did not occur in a construction zone with workers present
- Violation did not occur while passing a school bus
If you meet the above requirements and you wish to take the driving safety course, you must submit all of the following documents and court costs. Incomplete requests will not be processed.
- Your plea of guilty or no contest
- Written request to take the course
- Valid Texas driver´s license (photocopy if mailing your request)
- Proof of current liability insurance or valid evidence of financial responsibility
- Court costs (check or money order if mailing request)
- $95 for violations NOT occurring within a school-zone
- $120 for violations that DO occur within a school-zone
Upon meeting the requirements, and all paperwork and fees are processed, a 90-day extension will be granted to complete the course and show proof of course completion.
Proof of Completion
To show proof of completion of the defensive driving course, bring in or mail the original certificate of course completion from a certified defensive driving school. It is your responsibility to ensure that the proof arrives at the Court no later than the 90th day after the date your request was approved.
